Its only a year old, but we finally upgraded to Finale 2010 in studio 4, 5, 7, 8, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4.

Finale 2008 was removed from all machines.

C|24 talkback, No signal — just Noise

Problem: Digidesign C|24 control surface has a microphone embedded into the meter bridge for talkback applications. When I would push the talkback button and turn up the talkback gain, all I would hear was white noise through the C|24 Cue outputs.

Solution: In my case, all my wiring was correct (yeah), however, the external talkback microphone was enabled.

  1. Press the Utility switch
  2. Press “Preferences”
  3. Press “Talkback”
  4. Press “Off” for Ext TB Mic”

VueScan Software installed in Studio 8

vuescan

VueScan software in now in Studio 8. This tames the HP ScanJet and makes scanning possible again. If you own a scanner, check out this software. http://www.hamrick.com/ Thank Kyle Snyder for the tip.

New Studio 8 audio routing.

The Mackie Onyx console is freaking out.  Until we get it fixed, I thought of another way to work in the studio.  Use the Digidesign 003.

  1. Patch the Digidesign 003 Main outs (top row) to the subwoofer L,R inputs (bottom row).
  2. Select Digidesign HW as your audio output in the application
  3. OR –> select Built-in Line Output in the Apple System Preferences and push the “Aux In” (light on) on the 003

  4. Turn the “Monitor” knob on 003 to adjust overall volume

Metasynth 4 is now available

Metasynth Pro 4 (the 24 bit version) is not compatible with Leopard. UI software, the developer, said that they are working on it (and have been for the past year and a half). I installed the Leopard compatible-16 bit version, called Metasynth 4, on workstation ST9.6, 9.7, 9.8, ST4, ST5 and ST8

NOTE:  When you launch Metasynth, the top menu bar and the dock disappear. To see either the top menu or dock,  just mouse over their normal area and wait a few seconds. They will re-appear.

"...there it is"

Additionally, Metasynth pauses on an opening info screen for about five seconds before showing you the main work window.  If you’re the impatient type, just click on the green check mark.

If you don’t know about Metasynth, check out UI Software’s website.

Strange behavior. Cannot log out of ST8 Mac Pro

Problem: No user name in the top menu bar. Current user cannot log out, restart or shut down from the Apple menu.  User can put the computer to sleep from the Apple menu. No applications are running.

Solution:

  1. Force Quit Finder.  = No change in problem
  2. Force shut down by holding power button.  = No change in problem. In fact, computer boots to same user screen and not the normal log-in screen
  3. Turn off sharing. Force restart. = No change in problem.
  4. Unplug peripherals including network. Force restart. = No change in problem.
  5. Open computer.  Push to restart the System Management Controller (SMC).  Close computer and push power button.  = This one worked.  The computer booted to log-in screen. All is well.

How to connect to other computers from ST08

Problem: Currently, Studio 8 is on a separate subnet (xxx.xxx.18.xxx). I’m working to get that changed. So consequently, the list of computers in the musictech area do not show up in the finder as it only shows computers on the same subnet.  Other computers in the area are in the “xxx.xxx.16.xxx” subnet.

UPDATE: University Computing Services fixed the port.  It is now on the same network segment as all the rest of our computers. 1/7/09

connect-to-server

Solution: In studio 8, you need to go to the “Go” menu, then “Connect to Server…” or CMD-k. You can then type in the IP address of the desired connection.  You can also type in domain names.  TIP: to connect to our musictech server, type musictech.bsu.edu

If you don’t know the IP of the desired computer, then you’ll need to walk back to that computer and open its System Preferences.  In the system preferences, click on “Network”.  Look for the “Built-in Ethernet”.  The IP address will be listed.

about-this-macsystem-profiler-iconAnother way to find IP address is to use the System Profiler. You can find the application in the Applications/Utilities folder.  Or, you can select “About this Mac” from the Apple menu.  Clicking on “More Info…” will launch the System Profiler app. Within the System Profiler application, choose “Network”. Look for the “Built-in Ethernet” info.  The IP address will be listed.
